Soles Featured in Local Magazine: The Soles of Haverhill "Shoe-labration" will be featured in the Jan-Feb issue of  Merrimack Valley Magazine. Merrimack Valley Magazine is available at retail locations throughout the Merrimack Valley, including Market Basket and Rite Aid Pharmacy.

A Heartfelt Response: We recently received a phone call from a Haverhill resident stating she and her family have been continuing to visit the resident shoes at their various Haverhill locations. Her 5 year old autistic son finds the shoes amazing and has collected tee shirts, postcards, posters, and the news articles.
She and her son plan to visit the Merri Mac River Monster shoe in Western Massachusetts after the new year. The resident wished to expressed thanks to all who supported this public art celebration and wanted everyone to know what an impact it has made on her family, friends, and neighbors.

Shoes Making Debut

Fourteen sponsored shoes are underway or completed for the “Soles of Haverhill” public art festival. The giant shoe forms, creatively embellished by local artists, will be showcased by sponsors this month, and featured at the July 3 fireworks event prior to their installation around the downtown streetscape. The shoes will be auctioned off at a gala event at the Buttonwoods Museum on October 24, to benefit a variety of arts, cultural and community organizations. Alongside the public art component, a community history project called “Shoes and the Soul of Haverhill,” is examining the long-term impact of the shoe industry on the city’s character and spirit. Lead sponsor is the Soles of Haverhill Committee of the Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, with support from local and national sponsors, Haverhill Cultural Council and the Massachusetts Cultural CouncilFor more information, go to www.solesofhaverhill.com.

Mentors, Murals, Playgrounds

A new city-wide mentoring network is gearing up that will link Haverhill's public schools, four youth-serving agencies (YWCA, YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and Girls Inc.), Team Haverhill and the United Way in a co-ordinated community campaign; click "Read More" (below) to read a recent Eagle-Tribune article about the project. Three new murals were unveiled on May 3, designed for the passageways on each side of George’s Restaurant—created in collaboration with the Discovery Club Afterschool Program. And Team Haverhill volunteers demolished most of the old equipment at Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School on April to make way for new playground structures; in partnership with the City DPW, we will continue to make improvements in public playground facilities this year.

Washington Street Murals to be Unveiled

Team Haverhill and L.E.A.P. (Let’s Embrace the Arts and Preservation) invite the community to attend an unveiling ceremony of the Haverhill Mural Project on Sunday, September 30, 2007 at 11:00 a.m., 100 Washington Street (adjacent to the Tap Restaurant in Haverhill.)

Depicting the rich history of late 19th century Haverhill on its historic buildings, local artist Alan Pearsal from West Newbury has painted “trompe l’oeil” style murals.  These images will reflect the unique heritage and culture of downtown Washington Street Shoe District located along the Merrimack River. This project focuses on two aspects of the city’s past: the Shoe Mill is depicting scenes of workers from the shoe mills of Haverhill and The Olde Tavern is illustrating scenes of citizens who lived in Haverhill during the Colonial period, sharing stories of the time over drinks and food.

The Riverfront Mural Project is a partnership with Team Haverhill and L.E.A.P. and we envision a dream for downtown Haverhill to become a destination point for enjoyment that shares our city’s heritage with visitors and its residents, now and for years to come.

Team Haverhill wishes to thank the many generous sponsors and The Tap for their support in this alleyway project.  If you would like more information, please call Fran Hogan,  the Mural Committee (978)521-4380.
